Football Development In Right Direction – Dosu

May 20, 2012 in NEWS

Dosu Joseph, a member of the gold-winning U-23 squad at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Games, has said that the country’s football development is heading for the right direction.

Dosu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that the only way that the country’s football could be turned around was through a well thought-out development programme.

He stated that the current steps being taken by the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) in revamping the personnel of all the country’s national teams; meant that football was being repositioned for the better.

The former goalkeeper described the steps being taken by Stephen Keshi to rebuild the Super Eagles as “revolutionary’’ and said that it would change the face of domestic football in the country.

“Going by what the Super Eagles are doing, I will say football development is headed in the right direction, almost all the national teams are doing very well.

“Domestic football and the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) in particular stands to benefit from Keshi’s ongoing programme, because players will raise the level of their performance to earn an invitation.

“The NFA should ensure that the necessary logistics are put in place, to take our football to the height we all crave for,’’he said.

Dosu urged football administrators to also sustain the series of capacity-building programmes designed keep the country’s coaches abreast of  trends in coaching.

He told NAN that grassroots football development must be the centerpiece of the ongoing efforts to reposition football in the country.

“There is the need for football administrators to encourage long term development programmes to entrench the new mentality as opposed to the win at all cost approach,’’he said.

Dosu also prevailed on football stakeholders to ensure that coaches have water-tight contracts from their employers to guarantee job security.

“When such is done, coaches under contract would be able to settle down to do their job without let or hindrance.

“On the long run, the country’s football would be better off for it,’’the former U-23 and Super Eagles goalkeeper said.

Drogba sends Chelsea to Blue heaven

May 20, 2012 in Hot Gossip

Didier Drogba scored both the vital equaliser and the decisive penalty in the shootout as Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday night. The Ivorian, who was sent off in the 2008 final against Manchester United that the Blues lost on penalties, put those ghosts to rest by cancelling out Thomas Muller’s opening goal to send the game to extra time and then penalties at 1-1, before scoring the final spot kick to see the London side win 4-3 in the shootout. It was cruel on Bayern, who dominated the game on their own home ground, but Chelsea somehow kept themselves in the fight and held their nerve in the shootout to secure their first ever European crown and secure a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League

Minister Stresses Need For Preventive Tips For Healthy Living

May 19, 2012 in NEWS

The Minister of Health, Prof.Onyebuchi Chukwu, has called on family doctors to counsel families on the efficacy and efficiency of preventive tips to healthy living.

Chukwu made the call at a meeting of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners in Nigeria (AGPMPN) and the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) on Saturday in Abuja..

He said that the meeting, which coincided withWorld Family Doctors’ Day, was a good opportunity to reflect on ways and means to encourage families to keep healthy through preventive approach.

The minister said that Nigeria was burdened with communicable and none communicable diseases and that family doctors had a role to play in addressing these issues.

He said, “Do not only focus on the sick, but make time to counsel patients and their families on the role healthy living has on preventing illness.''

The minister was represented by Dr Bose Adeniran, Head of Reproductive Health Division of the ministry at the World Health Assembly.

Dr Ibrahim Wada, the Group Medical Advisor at Garki Hospital, told participants that Nigeria should now embrace Private Public Partnership in the attempt to achieve the Millennium Development Goal Five.

He said that PPP, as a strategy, would help in the achievement of MDG five, which focuses on maternal health.

“We are in age of PPP, which will provide an alternative to public management of healthcare and help tackle the health of the country’s rapidly growing population.”

Wada said that the best ways to ensure equal access to healthcare delivery was either through pooling everyone’s money  as in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) or by sourcing money through the PPP.

Wada said that the public and private sectors had their strengths and weaknesses, adding that the public sector had access to abundant resources.

He, however, said that the sector was suffering in resource allocation and corruption, while the private sector could boast of prudence in managing available resources.

He said that the PPP was like a marriage of convenience between the public and private sector, as each partner brought to the table expertise that was needed to meet public needs.

Wada said that partnership was not about concession or about having one type of partnership plan for every hospital.

“There are many variations of partnerships that fall between private and public partnership, but they can only work if due process is followed and transparency is established.”

He said that the challenge in the PPP was how best to ensure access to world class health care at the least cost.

“What is ideal, is healthcare that is accessible, so that people do not have to travel miles and miles to get it.

“Healthcare that is affordable, so that people do not have to sell their homes to get it and healthcare that is efficient and can solve problems.”

NAN also reports that the events of the day marked the end of the associations Health Week and its Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, which had the theme: “Healthy Living: The role of family doctors''.

I’ll Have Another Keeps Triple Crown Dream Alive

May 19, 2012 in NEWS

I'll Have Another had to come from way behind around the final turn of Saturday's Preakness to keep its dream of a Triple Crown alive. The horse spent much of the race in fourth, while Preakness favorite Bodemeister had what looked to a commanding lead.

The Preakness is the longest race of the Triple Crown, and horses in the lead tend to fade down the stretch. Instead, it was I'll Have Another that charged from behind through the final turn. The horse took the outside lane and started charging towards Bodemeister. It was quickly a two horse race, and I'll Have Another caught up just in time to pass Bodemeister by a nose. It was enough to avoid a photo finish.

The finish was reminiscent of this year's Kentucky Derby because the exact same thing happened: I'll Have Another took it after coming from behind to beat the favorite, Bodemeister. The last time a horse completed the Triple Crown was when Affirmed won it all in 1978.

Sokoto State Targets 887,000 Children For Immunisation Against Polio

May 19, 2012 in NEWS

Alhaji Ibrahim Jibrin, the Special Adviser to Sokoto State Governor on Primary Healthcare, said the state would targeted 887,000 children in the May round of Immunization Plus Days.

Jibrin told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Saturday that the state immunized more than 1.3 million children in the March exercise.

He said the last exercise involved so many medical doctors, as well as students from School of Nursing and Health Technology and that was why it recorded the feat.

The special adviser said that immunising more than 1.3 million children during the last exercise was more than the anticipated number.

He said, “We had to involve the services of medical doctors, students from the School of Nursing and Health Technology, and this made the state to immunise more children than ever before.''

The special adviser said that the agency had put in place programmes that would ensure that the state would be free from wild polio virus.

He said that continued enlightenment and rehabilitation of primary health care facilities had been carried out for the success of  the exercise.

Jibrin said that other programmes aimed at making the exercise succeed were strengthening the drug revolving funds, and organising workshops on polio eradication.

All so included is collaborating with Northern Traditional Rulers Forum in addition to setting up of Ward Development Committees to ensure that the people of the state access healthcare services.

NAN reports that the state recorded five wild polio virus this year.

The routine immunisation exercise which started on May 19, would end on May 22.

Spot-on Drogba the hero as Chelsea sink Bayern

May 19, 2012 in NEWS

MUNICH, Germany  (AFP) – Didier Drogba was the hero as Chelsea shattered Bayern Munich’s Champions League dream here on Saturday with victory in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out at the Allianz Arena.

Drogba stepped up to rifle home the winning penalty for Chelsea after earlier saving his side with an equalising goal two minutes from time to cancel out what looked like a winner from Thomas Mueller as the match finished at 1-1.

It was an agonising defeat for Bayern, who saw midfield maestro Bastian Schweinsteiger miss with their final kick to give Drogba the opportunity to score the penalty to clinch the shoot-out 4-3.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech also saved brilliantly from Ivica Ovic to get Chelsea back into the shoot-out after Juan Mata had missed the Premier League side’s opening effort.

Drogba’s winning spot-kick was a fairytale ending for the 34-year-old Ivorian striker, who had been sent off in the final minutes of Chelsea’s Champions League final defeat in Moscow four years ago.

But the loss left Bayern shattered as their dream of lifting their fifth European title before their own fans at their home ground ended in agony.

A match Bayern had dominated went to penalties after a frenetic finish to normal time, with Mueller heading Bayern into the lead seven minutes from time only for Drogba to equalise for Chelsea in the 88th minute.

A dramatic start to extra-time then saw Bayern’s former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben miss a penalty — saved by Cech — after Drogba had needlessly brought down Franck Ribery in the area.

For much of the match a Bayern victory had looked the likeliest outcome, with the Bundesliga giants revelling in the raucous support of their home fans.

They suffered an early setback when Schweinsteiger was booked for a nervy handball after only two minutes, but thereafter they enjoyed a virtual monopoly of possession.

Schweinsteiger was the first to set alarms off in the Chelsea back four, having his shot deflected behind by Gary Cahill after only three minutes.

Toni Kroos was next, his low shot drifting just wide of Cech’s upright.

Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo had sprung a surprise by handing a first Champions League start to youngster Ryan Bertrand in an effort to cut off the supply lines to Arjen Robben down the right flank.

However the wily Dutchman found space with ease in the eighth minute, cutting in from the flank and curling a shot over the bar.

The former Chelsea winger produced the best chance of the half on 21 minutes, teasing the ball past Jose Bosingwa to dart into the area. Robben’s shot was low and hard, but Cech stuck out a leg and the ball cannoned to safety.

The closing stages of the half saw Bayern up the tempo and they carved out a string of openings that they could well have scored from.

On 36 minutes Ribery and Diego Contento combined down the left to send Contento racing away. The left-back whipped in an inviting cross but Mueller could only slash his first-time volley wide of the post.

Chelsea, largely anonymous in attack until that point, then forced Neuer into his first save of the match.

A sweeping counter-attack saw captain Frank Lampard lay off to Salomon Kalou whose thumping low drive was gathered at the near post by the Bayern keeper.

Bayern’s pressure should have earned a reward but Mario Gomez squandered two promising openings shortly before half-time, slicing from close range on 39 minutes and then blazing over from just inside the area after losing Cahill.

The second half followed largely the same pattern as the first, with Bayern having a goal disallowed for offside by Ribery on 54 minutes.

The Germans were thwarted by some dogged Chelsea defending, with Cole saving the Londoners with a series of telling interventions.

It looked all over for Chelsea when Mueller headed in to put Bayern 1-0 seven minutes from time. But Drogba had other ideas to set up the extra-time finale.

However Chelsea looked to have squandered parity in the fourth minute of extra-time, when Drogba needlessly clipped Ribery to concede the softest of penalties from referee Pedro Proenca.

Once again though Chelse’sa refusal to yield came to their rescue, Cech diving low to his left to thwart Robben’s spot-kick with his legs as the tension rose to excruciating levels.

Substitute Olic almost won it for Bayern in the 108th minute, but his shot flashed across goal as the game went to penalties.
